Lamb to the Slaughter- Modern

The room was clean for a tuesday night, considering I hadn’t done the housework since Saturday. I had the blinds down to keep the afternoon sun out as it usually got unbearably hot in the late afternoons. I had just got home from work and was getting out some drinks for when Patrick got home from work. It’s our usual after work routine, have some drinks although they haven’t been doing this since I was 6 months pregnant, so it’s just him having a few beers. She thought as she looked at her phone that he must be home any moment now. She heard the gravel of the  driveway crumble under Patrick’s ute as he pulled swiftly into the driveway. He walked through the front door, putting her phone down, she walked over to him and gave him a hug.

“Hi darling” he said

“Hey, how was work?”

His response was the same as usual, really busy but things are going well since the new job. He took off his jacket and threw it on the couch and sat down on the couch before immediately turning on the tv. “Still want to go out for tea tonight Patrick’ asked Mary politely.

“Nah” he answered bluntly “too tired”. This happened quite often, and it always made Mary curious as to why.

Takeaways or should I make something?

“Don’t care” he replied bluntly.

He didn’t  seem very talkative but Mary thought it was just because he was tired.

As Patrick grabbed his beer, Mary expected him to get her a snack however he didn’t. They just sat there on their phones, Mary scrolling through instagram and Patrick probably looking at the rugby results, until Patrick got a phone call. He ignored it.

“Who was that?” Mary asked, she  knew it wasn’t a workmate because his work number is turned off after 5pm.

5 mins later the takeaways arrived, Mary had decided on Pizza from the store down the road, as Patrick didn’t really care. Patrick  jumped up to get it from the door, it was the least he could do with Mary being extra tired from her pregnancy. Just as he left, another phone call came through on his phone. She didn’t look over at his phone until another few texts came through. It was from ‘kate’ with a heart beside the name. Immediately she knew what was happening. Everything that was happening was all making sense now. She couldn’t even believe to think of what he had done. He walked back in with the pizzas looking a little flustered. Mary walked straight out of the room and into the bathroom and closed the door. The emotions hadn’t really hit yet but she was furious. She pulled herself together as she knew she had to do something about it, she could let him go on with him doing something like that. She hurried back out to the kitchen and began to put the pizzas on a wooden serving plate. With her exact instinct in that moment, she threw the wooden plate across the room aiming at him. She let all her anger and disappointment out on that throw. It hit him right in the head. He let out a scream and fell to the ground.
